History:
It is believed the Great Dane originated in Germany, despite its name which would suggest Denmark. Large hunting dogs were long used in Europe, and the Great Dane may have its roots in Molossian hounds, Suilot dogs, and other dogs which were brought in to increase the size of the hunting dogs even more. The name “Great Dane” was decided upon in 1755 due to strained relationships between Germany and other countries.
