Description

Zebras are a member of the horse family native to the mountains, plains, grasslands, and woodlands of Africa. Did you know that like tigers, the stripes of a zebra are unique to each individual, and no two zebras look exactly alike?

  • Scientific Name: Family Equus
  • Characteristics: There are actually three species of zebra: the plains zebra, the Grevy’s zebra, and the mountain zebra! Not only does this hand painted model depict the iconic coloration present on all three species, but also the thick mane, hooves, and bushy horse-like tail.
  • Size and Color: Measuring 4.25 inches long and 3.5 inches tall, this professionally crafted zebra figurine is a bit taller than a deck of cards stood upright and a bit shorter than a soda can on its side. Not sure if zebras are black with white strips or white with black stripes? Recent studies showed they’re actually black with white stripes!
  • The Zebra is part of the Wild Safari® Wildlife collection.
  • All of our products are Non-toxic and BPA free.

History:

Experts aren’t exactly sure as to the purpose of the zebra’s stripes. The main theory as to why zebras evolved with them is related to camouflage, as vertical striping might help zebras hide in tall grasses by obscuring their outline. Similarly, a group of zebras standing together might confuse a predator because of the many different stripes blending together. On the other hand, some experiments have found that striped animals actually draw less interest from flies, parasitical ones included!
