Description
The closest living relative to humans, chimpanzees can be found in the tropical forests, grasslands, and scrub forests of central Africa. Incredibly intelligent, chimpanzees and can learn to use tools, hold conversations through sign language, and even express their emotions!

History:
Also referred to as chimps, chimpanzees are often studied due to their close evolutionary relationship to humans. Unfortunately, chimps are considered endangered due to a loss of their natural habitat from the growth and incursion of human populations. While they can still be found in Angola, Cameroon, and Nigeria, they are no longer endemic to Gambia, Togo, Benin, and Burkina Faso.
