History
The bald eagle became the national symbol of the United States in 1782, just six years after independence. There were tens of thousands of the majestic raptor at the time, ranging throughout the continental U.S. For a variety of reasons, their population plummeted to a low of 417 pairs by 1963. The story didn’t end there, however, as massive conservation efforts were undertaken to protect the gorgeous birds. Laws were passed to ban DDT, restrict lead, and limit certain pesticides thought harmful to eagles. They gained further protection when listed as an endangered species. By 1995, bald eagle populations recovered to the point where they were downgraded from endangered to threatened. Today, it’s not uncommon to spot bald eagles soaring above rivers and marshes throughout the U.S.
