History
Although Hippos no longer live in the lower Nile areas of Egypt, the massive beasts were once important elements of Ancient Egyptian culture. The relationship was complicated, however. On one hand, Hippos lived in the waters and mud of the life-giving Nile River, so they received honor and respect and were seen as symbols of rebirth. The Egyptian goddess Tauret, who protected women giving birth, even has the face and body of a Hippo. On the other hand, Hippos were dangerous. They ate newly planted wheat, they overturned ships, and they were quite deadly. Eventually, Hippos were hunted to extinction in the lower Nile area of Egypt, but they range freely throughout central Africa.
