History
The first known proboscidean appeared in Africa around 60 million years ago, just a blink of the eye after dinosaurs went extinct. It stood only 3 feet tall at the shoulders and had a short trunk. These early mammals spread throughout Africa and into Asia and Europe, and as the age of mammals hurtled toward its climax, they began to increase in size. The best known descendants are the massive Stegodon, which may have been 26 feet long, along with the giants Wooly Mammoth and Mastodon, beasts of the ice age. From the same family tree came the Indian and African Elephants, although interaction with humans and millions of years of shifting climates have reduced their ranges back to the Indian subcontinent and Africa south of the Sahara.
